Afghanistan: US troops to stay until all Americans aren’t evacuated – Biden

by News Desk August 19, 2021

President Joe Biden has said that US troops will stay in Afghanistan until each and every American isn’t safely evacuated. Hinting an extension to his August 31 deadline as over 15,000 Americans are still in Afghanistan, Biden said the troops will stay to ascertain the safety and evacuation of Americans.

About 4,500 US troops are at the Kabul airport overseeing the smooth sailing of the process. Afghans trying to get to the airport have been stopped by the Taliban at various checkpoints leading to the airfield and many who have documents to travel are not being allowed to get through.

The chaotic scenes at the airport on Monday forced the US forces to stop all operations until they regain control of the situation and since then the process has gained speed but will still take weeks before all American citizens are safely evacuated from the country.

The Taliban granted a pardon to all government officials including those who helped Western forces, but their attempts to stop Afghans from reaching the airport is raising fears of persecution after the evacuations are complete.

With some Americans stranded outside the airport it is unclear how they will be rescued in time and Biden is under pressure for making promises to get each and every American out of the country, but with it being likely for the evacuations to cross his given deadline Biden has promised to keep the forces on ground until all Americans are safe..
