“I was sickened. I was sickened by the standing ovation,” Carrey told Gayle King on CBS Mornings.
Here’s what happened:
At the stage of the 94th Academy Awards, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on face after Rock cracked a “G.I. Jane” joke on Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett pointing out her baldness.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth,” Smith shouted twice after returning to his seat beside his wife.
Smith was in tears during his acceptance speech for the best actor, starring in “King Richards” the movie. The speech came minutes after he had physically assaulted Chris Rock on stage of Academy Awards – broadcasting worldwide. The Oscars audience applauded Smith with a standing ovation despite witnessing the horrendous act.
Carrey’s indignation:
Jim Carrey takes a jab at the Oscars audience: “Hollywood is just spineless en masse.”
Smith should’ve been arrested and sued told Carrey.
“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous,” Carrey continued.
“You know, that insult is going to last a very long time.”
“You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”
King then implied that the incident “escalated.”
“It didn’t escalate, it came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated.” replied Carrey.
“I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things, but that was not a good moment.”
“It was such a selfish moment that cast a pall over the whole thing,” Carrey concluded.
Smith’s actions have overshadowed The entire awards ceremony and now it’s all about him. Many are saying that he has ruined the sacred legacy of the Oscars and insulted the entire list of recipients of the prestigious awards.
