Afghanistan: Flights halted; 500 additional troops sent
All military and civilian flights in and out of Kabul have been stopped indefinitely. US troops are working on securing the airport where the situation turned into a tragedy after Afghans were seen invading the runway in order to somehow get inside the military aircrafts that were taxing.
Civilians were seen falling to their deaths in horrific videos shared online and since then the Pentagon has decided to regain control of the premises and conduct an orderly evacuation. US troops also shot two armed men who were trying to get close to American citizens.
500 additional troops have been sent to Kabul who will join the 2,500 American troops currently at the airport trying to reestablish order. Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby is hopeful of a resumption of air operations in the coming hours.
