Ohio man charged after hate crime related attack on Asian student
An Ohio man has been charged with Federal hate crime after he allegedly attacked an Asian American student in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The alleged attack was based only on race and the suspect was identified as 26-year-old Darrin Johnson, a Black male.
The suspect was indicted by a Grand jury earlier this week on Federal hate crime charges long after he allegedly attacked an Asian victim near the University of Cincinnati campus back in August 2021, according to the DOJ.
In its statement, the Department of Justice said Johnson, a Black male, told the Asian victim to “Go back to your country … You brought the kung flu here … You’re going to die for bringing it.”
After threatening the victim, Johnson punched him on the side of his head which made the victim fall on the floor and hit his head on the bumper of a car.
Johnson was then caught after two witnesses intervened where one of them held Johnson down before the Police arrived.
The Asian American victim suffered multiple injuries, including facial lacerations and a small concussion.
In October 2021, Johnson had pleaded guilty to the “misdemeanor assault and criminal intimidation for the incident and was sentenced to serve 360 days in county jail.”
Johnson will now face up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the Federal hate crime.
Hate crimes against Asians have grown significantly since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic that originated from Wuhan, China and erupted across the World, forcing it to close and destroy livelihoods while taking people’s loved ones away.
