India bridge collapse kills 141

by News Desk October 31, 2022

A hundred-year old pedestrian bridge that collapsed in India’s Gujarat state has killed 141 people with many still missing, according to officials.

The 754ft bridge on the Machchu river, built during the British Raj, failed to withstand the weight of the massive crowd that gathered to celebrate Diwali.

The pedestrian bridge was a famous tourist attraction known as “Julto Pul,” known for its “swinging.”

Over 170 people have so far been rescued by the Indian military, Police and disaster rescue teams. Most of the victims were women, children and the elderly. According to officials, the bridge was reopened to the public after repairs 4 days ago.

Several videos on social media showed the dreadful scenes after collapse where people were hanging in mid-air as others fell on top each other or drowned.

An investigation has been launched into the incident and local authorities have blamed “overloading” for the collapse.

Several criminal cases have been registered and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced monetary compensation for the victims after offering condolences.
