Two 7th fleet cruisers are sailing through the Taiwan Strait as part of routine transit, announced the Navy.

The operation is in accordance with International law and comes right after China conducted drills in response to Speaker Pelosi’s visit to the island.

Two guided-missile cruisers Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers USS Antietam (CG 54) and USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) conducted “a routine Taiwan Strait transit August 28 (local time). through waters where high seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law.”

The Navy announced that the transit is the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The ship’s transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The United States military flies, sails, and operates anywhere international law allows.

The Navy concluded in the statement.

The transit comes as tensions in the region rise because of China’s actions and attempts to overthrow the Taiwanese government and take control of the self-governing island that sees itself as an independent country.
