Afghanistan: US airstrike destroys ISIS-K car bomb
Update:
The drone strike by the US destroyed a car bomb also carrying “multiple suicide bombers” to Kabul airport. This is the second airstrike targeting ISIS-K terrorists after they attacked the Abbey Gate of Kabul airport resulting in deaths of 13 US service members and multiple Afghans.
“We are confident we successfully hit the target. Significant secondary explosions from the vehicle indicated the presence of a substantial amount of explosive material,” US Central Command Spokesman, Capt. Bill Urban wrote in a statement.
It is unclear whether any civilian casualties occurred.
“We are assessing the possibilities of civilian casualties, though we have no indications at this time. We remain vigilant for potential future threats,” the statement continued.
An anonymous Afghan official says that three children were killed in the strike including other civilian casualties.
Previously, President Biden had warned of a potential terror threat within the next 24 to 36 hours and told that the airstrike in response to Thursday’s terror attack would not be the last one.
The US evacuation process from Afghanistan has reached its final phase and the “dangerous dangerous” situation persists at the Kabul airport according to Biden.
An explosion has been heard in Kabul. Smoke was seen coming out of a residential area that is located near the airport.
The blast is suspected to be a rocket attack. Casualties unknown at the moment and the rocket did not the airport.
Videos on social media show residents running away from a house where the rocket allegedly fell. (Since the videos are running on social media, we cannot confirm if they are true or not).
The US has conducted an airstrike against ISIS-K militants. No confirmation yet whether the strike was in response to the rocket attack.
