Afghanistan: Situation deteriorating at airport again
US citizen have been warned not to head towards the airport amid the rising tensions that may lead to a massive stampede or another attempted breakthrough in hopes of getting to the runway.
A security alert issued by the US embassy in Afghanistan asks citizens not to travel to the airport due to security threats.
“Because of potential security threats outside the gates at the Kabul airport, we are advising U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and to avoid airport gates at this time unless you receive individual instructions from a U.S. government representative to do so,” the mission said in a statement.
Crowds, mostly Afghans wanting to get out of Afghanistan have set up camps outside the airport waiting to be let in and the security situation has been tense ever since US forces regained control inside the airfield and yielded the people back.
US citizens are told to only make the journey to the airport if asked by an embassy official, they have also been told not to phone the embassy for details and applications.
Videos have surfaced online showing Taliban fighters beating crowds with sticks as thousands were stuck in a stampede like situation outside the airport. With thousands gathered outside the airport it has turned into a devastating humanitarian crisis, with Afghans just not moving and pleading to be let in while foreign citizens are stuck along with them outside the airport or outside the premises at unknown locations.
The north has started an offensive against the Taliban and if the situation escalates then we will surely see a new civil war with both sides going after each others’ people and tribes for revenge, resulting in another mass genocide led by ethnic violence.
