Afghanistan: “Airport under fire”

by News Desk August 15, 2021

A security alert issued by the US Embassy reports of gunfire heard at Kabul’s airport. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had earlier said the US was moving its embassy compound to the airport.

Adding that the embassy has lists of people to safely evacuate.

The airport is housing US citizens awaiting departure from the country and they have been told to take shelter as the security situation is changing quickly.

Earlier, after entering the city the Taliban had freed all the prisoners from Afghanistan’s biggest prison. They ascertained their presence in the city would remain peaceful and reassured Afghans of no revenge and said they were waiting for a peaceful transfer of power, but gunshots were heard throughout Kabul soon after their arrival and with thousands of prisoners freed no one really knows what is happening throughout a besieged Kabul and who is behind what.

“Former President” Ashraf Ghani has already fled the country and Afghans are left stranded. Looking towards an uncertain future that may bring a peaceful transfer of power with all groups dropping arms and agreeing to coexist, or with all of them declaring war at each each other and follow the Taliban strategy thus cementing the never-ending war.
