Protestors attack Sri Lanka President’s home

by News Desk July 9, 2022

Thousands of protestors have attacked the Sri Lankan President’s house in the capital Colombo, demanding his resignation.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had already fled to a secure location. The protestors are demanding his resignation after months of protests and riots against the current government or “political elite” as dubbed by the Sri Lankans.

The island nation has been suffering from incontrollable inflation which has given rise to food, fuel and medicine shortages.

The protestors came from all over the country in cars and buses, some even taking control of trains to make their way towards the capital.

In a bid to disperse the demonstrators, Police fired aerial gunshots after the overnight curfew that was met with criticism was lifted.

Sri Lanka has defaulted on its loan payments, making it impossible for the country to import every day goods. The skyrocketing inflation has forced the people to overthrow the government which has been criticized for “mismanaging” the economy.

Experts believe the rule of the prominent Rajapaksa family to be coming to an end. The President who has avoided calls for his resignation may now finally leave office.

Failing to do so is expected to bring more political turmoil in Sri Lanka as the country’s economical collapse is just beginning.
