2 drones moving towards Iraqi base housing American troops intercepted
Two drones were intercepted on Monday as they moved towards an Iraqi base housing American troops.
The drones were intercepted on the anniversary of the US assassination of Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani. The base that was reportedly targeted was near the Baghdad Airport where Soleimani was killed in 2020.
Iran had threatened to avenge his killing and held a mass public funeral attended by the country’s leadership.
Soleimani was called the “World’s biggest terrorist” and “monster” by President Trump. He was behind coordinated attacks that targeted Americans and allies in the region.
Iraqi officials say Iranian-backed groups were behind this foiled attempt. The drones were reportedly intercepted by Iraqi forces before they could reach the base housing US troops, or the Baghdad International Airport.
Iran has yet again threatened to exact revenge if President Trump and then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo aren’t put on trial.
