Former South Korean President gets government pardon
South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in has pardoned former President Park Geun-hye.
Park Geun-hye was serving a 22-year sentence for a corruption scandal. She was convicted of abusing her power after becoming the first South Korean leader to have been impeached from office.
Local media reports suggest Park was pardoned because of her poor health as she was hospitalized at least three times this year due to back pain.
Her exoneration comes after South Korea’s former Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook was also pardoned.
Park was originally sentenced to 30 years in prison after being found guilty of 16 out of 18 charges. The High Court however, reduced it to 20 years for corruption and abuse of power.
She has denied doing anything wrong.
