CNN fires Chris Cuomo for helping then-Governor Andrew Cuomo
CNN has fired its prime time anchor Chris Cuomo for helping prepare his brother, estranged former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s response to the sexual harassment allegations.
The network’s decision comes after it conducted an inquiry over the newly released evidence of baby Cuomo helping the older Cuomo.
Andrew Cuomo had resigned in August after calls for his resignation grew and he was expected to be impeached.
Chris Cuomo’s involvement into the “contrite” response was first revealed in the NY AG’s report. But the extent of it was further exposed last Wednesday as more evidence was publicly released by the AG office.
CNN’s decision comes amid the growing criticism of the network’s inaction over Chris Cuomo’s involvement. As his antics had put a question mark on journalism as a whole.
While Chris Cuomo was suspended from the network, CNN hired a “respected” law firm to investigate the extent of his involvement. The investigation concluded with Cuomo’s firing.
Chris Cuomo did not like the decision and in a statement said he was disappointed with the way things ended for him at CNN.
According to Wednesday’s evidence released by the AG office, Cuomo had pestered the former Governor’s staff to let him play a larger role in the response. He had originally pushed for a “contrite” response back when Lindsey Boylan first came out, and was concerned with the way some of the staff members had originally planned to create the then-Governor’s response.
He did all this while working at CNN. While coming out daily, preaching how sacred journalism is, and “exposing” everything and everyone’s double-standards, along with their “hypocrisy.”
Cuomo had also told the then-Governor’s staff that he’d use his sources to learn more about the accusers, and whether more were set to go public.
Even though he has been fired. Cuomo’s involvement into Andrew Cuomo’s response has forever damaged journalism. CNN is set to lose the public’s trust, but journalism as a whole will be tested.
People will always be skeptical before trusting news reports, and analyses. If people at a big network like CNN can do it – Use the network’s, or their own resources to gather dirt, or benefit a personal or favorable contact – Then every other journalist can too.
Journalism can never work without the public’s trust, and networks like CNN might ultimately survive, but the independent journalists will naturally face the heat of the natural lack of trust.
