Child latest fatality in Waukesha parade attack; death toll reaches 6
Suspect Darrell E. Brooks is set to be charged with the deaths of six people, now including one child after he rammed his vehicle into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
8-year-old Jackson Sparks lost his life while he was innocently marching alongside his 12-year-old brother. Sparks was marching with his baseball team when he was hit by the car.
He underwent a brain surgery on Sunday but could not survive. His brother has a fractured skull, and is expected to recover. However, his entire life will forever be changed, along with the rest of the 62 people injured, with 18 of them being children.
Six people have so far lost their lives, and 62 are suffering from injuries and memories that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Countless people are still in intensive care.
During Tuesday’s court appearance, suspect Brooks cried as the five charges of intentional homicide were laid out. Prosecutors are working on bringing more charges.
Each of his charges carries a life sentence. Brooks had left a domestic dispute before ramming into the marchers, according to Police.
Just two days before the deadly attack, Brooks was released on a $1,000 bail. He was facing charges for running over the mother of his child earlier in November.
Milwaukee County District Attorney, John Chisholm, a Democrat has long advocated for lower cash bails for criminal defendants so that it’s easier for them to be out before their trial.
Chisholm said that he is now reviewing Brooks’ $1,000 bail to decide whether it was unfittingly low.
When Brooks posted the $1,000 bail, he was already out on another bail and awaiting trial for firing a gun at his nephew and another person.
Judge Kevin Costello said that he has never “seen anything like this in [his] very long career.” Suspect Brooks’ latest bail is set at $5m because of his lengthy criminal history, and because he had absconded from previous charges in Wisconsin and Nevada.
The victims:
Wilhelm Hospel, 81
Virginia Sorenson, 79
LeAnna Owen, 71
Tamara Duran, 52
Jane Kulich, 52
Died of multiple blunt force injuries, according to the medical examiner.
An officer responding to the scene described that Brooks seemingly showed “no emotion” on his face. Police said he “intentionally” moved in a “zig-zag pattern” to hit as many marchers as possible.
About 20 minutes after running over those innocent people. Brooks cleverly fooled a resident who let him inside their house and gave him a jacket and made him a sandwich, not knowing what he had just done.
Police caught him after a neighbor became suspicious and asked Brooks who wanted an Uber ride to leave.
The lives of those who lost their loved ones, and who have survived this horrific incident have forever been changed. Even the lives of those who were there and witnessed it all.
Our hearts go out for all of them.
