Iraq’s Prime Minister survives apparent drone attack on home

by News Desk November 7, 2021

Iraq’s Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survived a drone attack on his home in Baghdad’s Green Zone.

The foolproof Green Zone which houses foreign embassies saw an attack after a drone equipped with explosives nosedived into a building. Six of al-Kadhimi’s guards were injured in the attack, the Prime Minister escaped uninjured.

The attack was condemned by both the US and Iran. Mustafa al-Kadhimi has called for peace and restraint from everyone. The attack comes amid the violent protests over the recent election results.

About three “suicide drones” were used in the attack. Two were shot down while one managed to hit its target.

No one so far has claimed to have carried out the attack.

Mustafa al-Kadhimi was sworn into office in May of 2020. Iraq’s recent elections saw a low turnout, with under 50% Iraqis participating.

With such a low turnout, forming a government has been tough. Various parties are trying to form a coalition. Since Iranian-backed parties failed to get the support of the people, they are now protesting out on the streets.

The attack comes at a time of political instability, where Iraq could delve deeper into chaos.
