Migrant Crisis: US special envoy to Haiti quits over deportations

by News Desk September 23, 2021

US Special envoy to Haiti, Daniel L. Foote has resigned in protest over the “inhumane” deportations of Haitian migrants.

He called the situation a human tragedy in his resignation letter and said that Haiti is a collapsed state that cannot afford to look after or feed the thousands being deported.

Foote served in his role since July after the Haitian President’s assassination.

A Department of State spokesperson acknowledged the envoy’s work and thanked him for his service while stating that the DOS is committed to maintaining a safe, humane and orderly migration process throughout the region.

The US has deported over 1,200 Haitian migrants since Sunday after a fresh swarm overwhelmed the already struggling system.

Over 11,000 migrants, mostly from Haiti had arrived at the Southern border on Thursday.

To protect themselves from the heat, they soon took shelter under a bridge connecting Del Rio to Mexico’s Ciudad Acuña.

After setting up camps, the migrants bathed in the Rio Grande river that provides drinking water to over 6 million people.

As the Border Patrol was struggling to provide them with food and sanitary products, the migrants were busy using their smartphones to hold video calls.

In response to this sudden surge which was thought to be influenced by the earthquake, the Biden Administration had stopped deportation flights to Haiti.

The decision however, was soon overturned after criticism and concerns over it inviting thousands more were raised.

As flights resumed and Haitians were flown back, many showed their displeasure by throwing rocks and shoes at the planes, injuring crew members and two pilots in the process.

Some newer reports suggested that the Biden Administration in order to deescalate criticism stemming from the Democratic Party released thousands of Haitian migrants on US soil with a notice telling them to appear in under two months.

It is unclear whether the migrants would return for future hearings as Catch & Release has always been exploited by lone and/or young migrants looking to flee once released on US soil.

As events further transpired, the initial assumptions of the migrants fleeing Haiti because of the earthquake were also debunked.

According to newer reports that cite Border officials, the Haitians arriving aren’t coming directly from the country, but have been living in South America for years.

This raises questions on whether all the Haitian migrants arriving were actually affected by the devastation of the earthquake?

The majority of them were seen chatting with their families via video calls on their smartphones as the Border Patrol and human rights groups provided their camps with food and water.

As the US began its crackdown, some images appeared online showing Border Patrol on horseback.

Many conspiracy theorists of the Left wrongly labelled the officers as “whipping” the migrants, whereas the whips were/are actually used to control the horses.

Many even questioned the use of horses, and we’d like to ask them to provide a better alternative that works fast and well on the type of terrain and near or in water? (And also has 0 carbon emissions?)

The Democrats have criticized the Biden Administration over its response and are demanding all Haitians be given asylum.

Because of Biden’s promises made during the campaign trail, the US saw a historic rise in border crossings and apprehensions.

Biden who had always criticized President Trump’s stance has gone on to create records in getting himself tangled in self-made crises.

He would not have seen the record-breaking surges had he avoided making unrealistic promises to foreigners wishing to cross illegally.

In the end, it will be the local communities that will continue to suffer by having their funding choked and spent on the looking after of the migrants.

Lawmakers forget, or fail to emphasize on the fact that the illegal migrants won’t get jobs so their only way for survival would be through local aid, non-profit community services, or through crime.

The anatomy of the migrants behind the crisis

They will need to be looked after and funds allocated for specific communities will be redirected.

Apart from that, any criminals that sneak in through with the swarms will harm the local communities along with the migrants they came with.

The local communities and law enforcement end up doing the real work and make the real sacrifice, while the Democratic lawmakers dance at events, and then suddenly show “concern” while sitting behind their desks over a thousand miles away, preaching things and pitching ideas that look and sound good but are impractical.
