Cop fatally shoots armed suspect in Washington DC
Washington DC – A police officer shot and killed a man who possessed a gun.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded to a dispatch at 3AM on Wednesday, of an unconscious driver in a car. After arriving at the scene, the responding officers saw a gun in the waistband of the suspect.
The officers equipped with ballistic shields tried to wake the suspect up but things got out of hand as the officers then shot the suspect after he tried to drive away in an attempt to flee. The suspect crashed into a tree and was then transported to a local hospital, according to the Police.
He was later pronounced dead by the Emergency personnel at the Hospital, DC Police Chief Robert Contee said.
This was the second Police shooting recorded in a 24-hour period in D.C.
Chief Contee told the reporters, “It’s unfortunate that we have to come face to face with armed gunmen in our community,” and “clearly when people are in possession of a firearm, it makes communities unsafe, it makes police officers unsafe,” He added. “It’s not a situation we want to find ourselves in,” he further said.
A gun was later recovered from the suspect’s car. Contee said that as of yet, the MPD has confiscated about 1400 illegal firearms this year.
The police however, did not state how many officers were involved in the shooting or how many shots were fired.
