Spears to charge father for ‘conservatorship abuse’

After being permitted by the court to choose her own attorney,  Mathew Rosengart, the pop icon Britney Spears wants the court to charge her father Jamie Spears for ‘conservatorship abuse’

Conservatorship is a legal process in which a judge appoints a guardian to look after the finances and or daily life of another person – who is either mentally unstable or is of old age. The guardian is called a ‘conservator’ and the person under the observation of the conservator is called a ‘conservatee’. The conservator is responsible for the conservatee’s financial affairs and daily life decisions.

Britney has been a conservatee since 2008 when her father filed a petition to temporarily put the popstar in his conservatorship after she had several public meltdowns ranging from her bitter divorce to the shaving of her head and attacking the paparazzi, etc. The temporary conservatorship was soon made permanent.

Under the conservatorship Britney has released four studio albums with two earning Platinum, she also went on to become a judge in the reality competition show The X-Factor. In March of 2019, Andrew Wallet who was Britney’s co-conservator since 2009 resigned after she had cancelled her planned Las Vegas residency and announced an indefinite hiatus earlier in January. Spears then went into a mental health facility the same month due to the stress from her father’s health during his recovery from a near-fatal colon rupture.

In April of 2019, a fan podcast released a voice message that claimed to be a former member of Spears’ legal team. The message alleged that it was Spears’ father Jamie who had cancelled the planned residency after Britney had refused to take her medication, the message also alleged that Jamie had been holding her in the facility since January after she had come in violation of a supposed no-driving rule. The message went on claiming that her conservatorship was to end in 2009. These allegations gave birth to the #FreeBritney movement, an online movement started by her fans and supporters of human rights who want her to be able to make her own decisions in life and be removed from the ‘abusive conservatorship’.

The singer often posts videos performing and dancing ardently on the beat of various songs. In the comments, her followers ask her to wear a dress of a specific color to highlight if she needs help – these requests are sometimes responded to and Spears comes out wearing the dress of the same color.

“I’m here to get rid of my dad and charge him with conservatorship abuse” said Spears while addressing the court on Wednesday. She also expressed that she is ‘extremely scared’ of her father and that her father has ‘ruined’ her life through this conservatorship.

The legal battle has been despondent for Spears but the singer seems aplomb and is feeling ‘BLESSED’ after she was allowed to have a lawyer of her own choice. She took to Instagram after the court’s ruling on Wednesday.

Spears can be seen celebrating by riding a horse and then cartwheeling later in the video alongside a caption stating ‘GRATITUDE’ for the fans for supporting her which is then concluded by the #FreeBritney hashtag.

Jamie Spears claims there’s more to the story than what his daughter Britney wants people to believe but everyone has the right to lead their own lives and to live. If by law Britney Spears really needs to be under guardianship then she should get to choose.
