Queen Elizabeth has died

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has died at Balmoral aged 96, she reigned for 70 years.

Her family reached her Scottish home after concerns over her health grew on Thursday. Her eldest son, Charles, will now lead the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

The Buckingham Palace announced that “the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral.” The King (Charles) and Queen Consort will return to London tomorrow.

Elizabeth II’s reign marked the United Kingdom’s transition from an Empire to Commonwealth, the UK’s entry and exit to and from the European Union, and the end of the Cold War.

The crowd outside Buckingham Palace awaiting the news about their Queen started crying after the Union flag was lowered.

Queen Elizabeth II was the UK’s longest-serving monarch who saw 15 Prime Ministers – from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss.

The new King, Charles, released a statement over the death of his mother. He’s described the death as the “greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.”

Born in 1926, Queen Elizabeth held the throne at the age of 27 when her father died. She was in Kenya representing her father when then-Prince Philip broke the news of his death.

Elizabeth then departed for London where she was crowned Queen. During her reign, she conducted around 300 official foreign trips.

Many anticipated the UK monarchy would end with the death of the Queen. It is up to Charles to keep the tradition afloat and make the monarchy relevant at a time when the entire World expects Democratic values to be enshrined.
