Suspects behind Gretchen Whitmer abduction plot convicted
Both the suspects accused of the plot to abduct Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer have been convicted.
The two men, Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr., were found guilty of conspiracy and according to prosecutors they wanted to start a “revolution” by abducting Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in their 2020 plot.
This was the second trial involving the two suspects after April’s mistrial where the two other suspects were found to be not guilty. Another two pleaded guilty to become witnesses and testify for prosecutors.
Gov. Whitmer was being targeted because of her strict response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Defense council of the suspects argued that the men were just angry at the Governor and were “big talkers” and didn’t mean to do anything that was planned in the plot.
The Jury deliberated from Monday afternoon to early Tuesday morning and came with the guilty verdict. The men according to the verdict were conspiring to obtain a bomb and blow up a bridge that would delay the Police’s response to the abduction of Gretchen Whitmer.
Delaware native Croft was convicted on a separate charge of explosives as well. Both suspects could now face life in prison, their councils have announced to file an appeal.
In her statement, Gov. Whitmer welcomed the verdict by saying that “violence has no place” in our society, and those who call for violence must be held accountable.
