Several killed and injured from nuclear plant fire and smoke in Ukraine
Several deaths and injuries have been reported by the Ukrainian government from the fire in an administrative building of a nuclear power plant that was attacked by Russia.
Experts are monitoring the Zaporizhia plant in Southeastern Ukraine to ascertain it runs normally and radiation levels stay controlled.
The entire World has condemned the brazen Russian attack on the plant which is currently ongoing. Thousands of civilians remain at risk and are unable to evacuate effectively because of the Russian shelling.
This could become the worst nuclear disaster to date, far greater than both Chernobyl and Fukushima, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Russia attacked the plant in a bid to overtake it, in doing so it violated all International Atomic Energy Agency agreements, according to the Ukrainian Ministry.
The affects of the fire have been fatal and both workers and residents are being poisoned if not burned alive by the fire. The toxic fumes can have both fatal short and long-term affects on the lives of those vulnerable.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has said that none of the plant’s safety systems were compromised and so far, no radioactive material has been released.
No nuclear power plant has the capacity to withstand an armed attack and experts fear even one small miscalculation can prove devastating.
