Canada’s Conservative Party boots Erin O’Toole as leader

Canada’s Conservative Party has voted to remove Party leader Erin O’Toole for failing to defeat the Liberals in last year’s elections.

Erin O’Toole held the post for about 18 months and was ousted in a 73-45 vote on Wednesday. O’Toole, who was criticized for failing to take a hardline stance against the Left was urged to resign as Party leader after the Conservatives failed in the elections.

A third of the Party members asked for a leadership review earlier this week because they saw O’Toole as a weak leader who did not take a strong position and often acted as a moderate.

O’Toole had urged his Party to unite and criticized calls for resignation. He urged his Party to stay united because their country needed them to stay together.

He had announced that he would accept the vote and was adamant of winning. Now that he’s lost, an interim leader will replace him until the Conservatives elect a new leader – their third since 2017.
