Harvard professor lied about China ties

Tuesday – A Harvard professor was convicted by a Jury of lying to the US about his involvement with the Chinese government.

According to the DOJ, Dr. Charles Lieber, 62, a former chair of Harvard’s Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology was found guilty of a total of six counts – two counts of making wrong statements to the Feds, two counts of failing to file reports of foreign financial accounts with the IRS, and two counts of submitting wrong income tax returns.

Since Lieber’s research group was funded by the DOD and NIH, he was required to declare any foreign conflicts of interest.

Lieber received about $50,000 per month from the Wuhan University of Technology, according to the DOJ. He was found to have lied about his connection with the University, and was also involved in a recruitment scheme that had him lure and send respectable scientists to China.

He was also given about $1.5m by China for the development of a Nanoscience research facility at the Wuhan Technology University. Lieber was found to have been a part of China’s grand scheme to lure high-level scientists to the country so that it could exploit them and steal tech, secrets, etc.

Lieber’s will soon be sentenced. The date however, has not yet been decided. He was arrested and charged in January 2020.
