Columbia University student stabbed to death by alleged gang member
Davide Giri, a 30-year-old Columbia University student, was stabbed to death by an alleged gang member near Morningside Park on Thursday evening.
The knife-wielding suspect was identified as Vincent Pinkney, 25, who was out on parole with 16 previous arrests.
Pinkney is a suspected gang member, and he wounded another victim after murdering Giri. Pinkney was taken into custody while threatening a third person near Central Park.
According to Police, Giri was stabbed in the stomach at around 11PM. He succumbed to his wounds at a nearby hospital.
The second victim, Robert Malastina, 27, an Italian tourist, was also hospitalized and is expected to survive.
Authorities believe Pinkney had no connection with the victims, and it was an unprovoked attack. Charges are still pending, and Pinkney is set to be arraigned later today.
He was arrested after a witness notified Police while the second attack was taking place. Pinkney was caught about 20 blocks away while threatening the third victim who suffered no injuries.
