FBI launches probe into spam emails sent from its server
The FBI has launched an investigation into the alleged breach of its internal server sending thousands of spam emails.
The possible cyberattack is part of an ongoing investigation, according to the FBI. The emails appeared to be signed by Homeland Security calling action to the threat.
The header was titled as “Urgent: Threat actor in systems.” The emails looked very real because they were coming directly from an FBI mail server.
Over a 100,000 spam emails were sent to undisclosed users. The FBI has taken the affected hardware offline after the issue was spotted.
The FBI and CISA are aware of the incident this morning involving fake emails from an @ic.fbi.gov email account. This is an ongoing situation, and we are not able to provide any additional information at this time. The impacted hardware was taken offline quickly upon discovery of the issue. We continue to encourage the public to be cautious of unknown senders and urge you to report suspicious activity to ic3.gov or cisa.gov.
The FBI statement read.
The investigation will find out whether an individual with cleared access was behind the emails, or if an actual attack took place.
US infrastructure has been under constant attack from hackers. Multiple breaches have taken place over the past two years, this time even an FBI server was infected.
