Brazil: Thousands gather for president’s removal

Thousands have gathered in protests organized by opposition parties calling for Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s removal.

The protests come exactly a year ahead of the country’s elections.

President Bolsonaro is falling behind on opinion polls because of his handling of the Pandemic.

More than 600,000 people have died in Brazil due to COVID-19. Many have criticized his government’s move to authorize Chinese vaccines, which many Brazilians believe to be ineffective or “fraudulent.”

The protests were held in over 150 towns and cities all across Brazil. People criticized Bolsonaro over the various humanitarian crises plaguing Brazil, and to “defend [their] democracy,” as quoted by the AFP news agency.

The leader of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies (Lower House) has also denied countless impeachment requests against Bolsonaro. Further drawing the public’s ire.

Bolsonaro is also facing multiple investigations approved by the Supreme Court. He had drawn out his supporters last month after recent polls showed him lagging behind his rival.

Saturday’s protests are in response to Bolsonaro’s claims of huge public support. Although, only the October 2022 elections will determine his popularity.
