US drone strike mistakenly killed 10 civilians – Pentagon
A drone strike on Aug. 29th mistakenly killed 10 civilians including children, says the Pentagon.
The airstrike was supposed to eliminate ISIS-K targets posing a security threat to the evacuation process at Kabul airport.
ISIS-K had previously carried out a deadly suicide bombing near the Kabul airport, which resulted in deaths of 13 US service members.
“We now assess it is unlikely that the vehicle and those who died were associated with ISIS-K,” the head of U.S. Central Command, Gen. Kenneth McKenzie said.
“Our investigation now concludes that the strike was a tragic mistake,” Gen. McKenzie told reporters.
He held himself ‘fully responsible’ for the airstrike and its tragic outcome.
The 10 victims reportedly belonged to the same family and included 7 children.
“I offer my profound condolences to the family and friends of those who were killed,” Gen. McKenzie added.
