Gen. Milley defends “secret” calls to China
General Mark A. Milley has defended himself after Woodward/Costa book revealed his secret phone calls with China behind President Trump’s back.
The calls were allegedly made in October and January to let the Chinese military know that the US won’t attack China.
Social media exploded, calling for the General’s removal and the Republicans too reacted strongly against the General’s alleged actions.
However, President Biden has “full confidence” in General Milley according to Press secretary Jen Psaki.
Gen. Milley’s spokesperson said that the “secret action” taken by Milley was in line with his “duties and responsibilities” to ascertain strategic stability.
The phone calls made to his Chinese counterpart Gen. Li Zhoucheng were first revealed on Tuesday.
Extracts from the book, “Peril,” allege that General Milley had made phone calls with China after the Jan. 06 riots, and believed the President’s mental health was “declining.”
Milley allegedly told the Chinese general that the American government was in a stable condition and the US would not attack.
If the US was to attack then the Chinese would be warned ahead of time, according to the extracts.
Milley’s alleged actions were influenced by his belief of the President’s “mental decline.”
In a call with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi where she raised concerns about the nuclear weapons, and called the President “crazy.” Milley “[agreed] with everything she said,” and told her the weapons were safe.
Senior Republicans are asking Biden to fire the General, saying such precedent against any President is intolerable.
President Trump’s former NSA John Bolton has applauded the General’s actions as calls for actions against him grow.
Bolton said the “secret action” prevented a possible war with China.
President Trump has accused the General of “treason” and called the claims “fake news” as such an event (of the US nuking China) never transpired.
