Brazil: Wife of Greek Ambassador jailed over his murder

A Brazilian woman has been sentenced to 31 years in prison, for masterminding the murder of her husband and former Greek Ambassador to Brazil, Kyriakos Amiridis.

In 2016, Amiridis’ remains were found in the trunk of a burnt car in Rio de Janeiro. It was found that he was murdered by his wife’s lover.

The murderer confessed to have killed the ambassador while being under the influence of love. Sergio Gomes, who was also a police officer has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

The judge described their crimes as barbaric. Gomes’ relative, Eduardo di Melo was acquitted, he had served a one year sentence for his role in hiding the ambassador’s body.

Françoise de Souza Oliveira, has one daughter with the ambassador after marrying him in 2004, he didn’t hold the position until 2016, the year he was killed.

Before his death, the ambassador was on vacation with his family and mastermind of his murder. The family were to spend Christmas together outside the capital.

His scorched body was found a day after his wife reported him missing, and investigators managed to find blood samples from their sofa, which ultimately helped them solve the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.
