Afghanistan: US troops to secure Kabul airport
After a 1,000 more troops were called in Afghanistan for the safe evacuation of embassy staff. 6,000 American troops will now secure Kabul airport amid the growing unrest at the airfield and after videos that surfaced online showed hundreds of Afghans running to the airfield in a bid to get onto flights.
The original plan to evacuate Americans from Afghanistan called for 3,000 troops, the number now increased to 6,000 shows just how bad the situation is, with the Afghan security forces non-existent since Ghani’s departure from the country after the Taliban started trekking towards Kabul.
Over 500 members from the US embassy in Kabul have been flown out of Afghanistan. Close to 3,500 US embassy staff members are yet to fly out of the country, the number includes both US and Afghan citizens.
