Japan COVID cases sky-rocket

by News Desk July 30, 2021

The Delta variant is gaining momentum in Japan which is hosting the previously delayed 2020 Olympics with strict rules and cardboard beds. Three of Tokyo’s neighboring localities are set to impose strict lockdown measures to curb the spread of the virus in the country already battling a birth-rate drop.

Over 70% of the COVID cases in Tokyo are of the highly contagious Delta variant that rose from India and wreaked havoc in the country. The variant has spread all over the World and is known to be the most contagious out of all and it is making its way through Japan as well.

Health officials are admitting their July 12 restrictions to curb the spread did not work as the virus has kept a steady momentum throughout the time and is now further exacerbating as the cases increase. The Japanese authorities have reported 9,583 cases, the NEW single-day highest recorded in Japan. The country is close to reaching 900,000 cases and has over 15,000 deaths.

The average Japanese was already skeptical about the Olympics and many feared a vast spread of COVID because of the event, but because of the investments and money the Japanese Government had spent they had to let it commence.

The Olympics organizing committee already confirmed 24 new cases on the 29th among those coming to Tokyo for the Olympics, three out of them being foreigners. COVID’s gold medal count in the competition has gone up to 193.

Experts are anticipating a steep rise in cases over the coming week after their strict provisions to curb the spread have failed. They are predicting at least 4000 daily cases in Tokyo. Japan’s vaccine stocks are already low and their earlier anticipations of a fifth wave were obliterated by Delta which has now doubled the number of daily cases.

Many in Japan are still worried over the Olympics but others are happy to see a change as the event goes on.
