The Canceled Globes

by News Desk May 11, 2021

The Golden Globes have been “canceled” for having no Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

After Netflix’s announcement of cutting ties, NBC has also announced that it won’t air the 2022 Golden Globes and is hopeful of meaningful changes being made so that they can be in a position to air the show in January 2023. Amazon Studios too have weighed in and have given an ultimatum to the organization, and if that wasn’t enough WarnerMedia too has said goodbye to the HFPA for now.

Hollywood actor Tom Cruise has also returned all three of his Golden Globes according to a report by The Associated Press.

The HFPA had announced to take up and solve the issue by revamping their structure but their plan has been criticized for being too slow.

Many others from the industry have also come out against the HFPA. Scarlett Johansson who has been nominated four times said “The HFPA is an organization that was legitimized by the likes of Harvey Weinstein to amass momentum for Academy recognition and the industry followed suit. Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole.” in a statement given to Variety.

Mark Ruffalo took to twitter with the hashtag ChangeIsGolden

With Hollywood canceling the HFPA it won’t be long before they make massive changes to bring in the diversity quota and to root out or minimize sexual harassment and corruption.
